Suburban Niles man charged with multiple felony hate crimes targeting Jewish Synagogue and school

39-year-old Shahid Hussain of Niles, Illinois was charged with eight (8) felonies including four (4) hate crime charges.

Suburban Niles man charged with multiple felony hate crimes targeting Jewish Synagogue and school

CHICAGO - City officials announced eight (8) felony hate crime charges against a suburban Niles man today who was alleged to have vandalized a Jewish synagogue and school.



The incidents occurred on Sunday at the FREE Synagogue and Hanna Sacks Bais Yaakov High School, and other locations in the West Rogers Park neighborhood along W. Devon Avenue and W. North Shore Avenue.[1]

Police announced they arrested Shahid Hussain, 39, of the 6900 block of W. Keeney in Niles, Illinois, for the crimes.

Shahid Hussain is charged with the following:

  • Two (2) felony counts - Hate Crime against a Church or Synagogue
  • Two (2) felony counts - Hate Crime against a School
  • Two (2) felony counts - Defacement of School Property <$500
  • Two (2) felony counts - Criminal Damage to a School <$500

The man is due in bond court today. It was not immediately clear whether Hussain had a lawyer to comment on his behalf.

The crashes occurred late in the morning and involved 40 to 60 passenger cars and multiple tractor-trailers, two of which caught fire, Illinois State Police Maj. Ryan Starrick said.
