Another 14-year-old shot today

Update: The victim has been identified as James Sweezer, 14. The victim has passed away from his injuries.


CHICAGO - Authorities are reporting the second 14-year-old shot today, this time in the Englewood neighborhood on the city's south side.



The first incident occurred in the mid-afternoon in the city's Near West Side neighborhood. This second incident occurred in the 1400 block of W. 73rd Street around 8:22 p.m. in the Englewood neighbordhood on the city's south side.

Police said another 14 year-old male was standing on the sidewalk, similar to the first incident, when an occupant in a dark-colored sedan traveling eastbound fired shots at the victim.

The teen was transported to Comers Children's Hospital by the Chicago Fire Department with a gunshot wound to the head and was initially listed in grave condition but it's possible he was stabilized and is now listed in critical condition.

Officials did not indicate if the shootings of the two teens were related. The addresses of the incidents are approximately 9-10 miles away from each other.

There is no one in custody for either incident and Area One detectives are investigating this second shooting while Area Three detectives are investigating the first.
