Update: The woman was reportedly delivering newspapers when the vehicle was stolen. Additionally, the suspect reportedly let one of the children out at the Home Depot parking lot near where the crash occurred, without realizing there was another child asleep in the back seat.

CHICAGO - A car was stolen this morning with children inside and the suspect who stole the vehicle crashed minutes later, authorities said.

The incident happened just after 5:00 a.m. in the 5600 block of N. Sacramento in the Peterson Park neighborhood on the city's north side.

Police said a female driver of a Jeep Liberty was making a delivery and left the vehicle running as she went to drop off the item. A black sedan, that witnesses said they thought was a Dodge Charger, pulled up behind the Jeep and an unknown male exited the passenger side.

The man got into the running Jeep and fled, with the black sedan following.

Two female children, a 10-year-old and a 12-year old, were inside the Jeep at the time.

Minutes later, the suspect crashed the vehicle in the 6300 block of N. McCormick and fled on foot.

Both of the girls were located safely and the vehicle was recovered.

No one was injured. No one is in custody at this time.

Area Three detectives are investigating.
