Two shot, 1 killed, directly outside 22nd District station

CHICAGO - A woman was killed and a man was wounded directly outside the Chicago Police Department's 22nd District Station on the city's south side last night.

The incident was so close, bullets even went through the windows of the tactical team office at the station.

The incident happened around 8:00 p.m Sunday night on the 1900 block of W. Monterey in the Morgan Park neighborhood on the city's south side. And yes, if you're wondering where you've heard that address before, it is indeed the address of the Chicago Police Department's 22nd District Station.

Despite happening just outside the station, it took investigators a few hours to piece together what happened.

Police said a man and a woman were driving in a red Dodge Charger on S. Vincennes Avenue when an occupant(s) of a gray Chrysler 300 began shooting at the victims inside their car.

The victims attempted to make it to the 22nd District station and even drove into the sally port (the secured/controlled entryway into the station) of the station to try and escape the offending shooter's vehicle. The offender(s) in the gray Chrysler were so brazen they reportedly briefly stopped in the drive entry of the sally port and fired additional shots at the victims, with several bullets even going into the station.

Between bullet holes in the vehicle and shell casings found at the scene, there were an estimated 34 rounds fired.

After a brief cover due to the gunfire, officers in the station ran out to help the victims, one of which (the male victim) had made it to the door of the station to beg for help. The other, a woman, had been critically wounded with a gunshot wound to the head.

  • Victim #1: A 46-year-old female was shot in the head. She was originally rushed to Christ Hospital in critical condition, but she was pronounced dead a short time later.
  • Victim #2: A 42-year-old male suffered a graze wound to the lower body and was transported to Christ hospital in good condition.

There is no one in custody. Area Two detectives continue to investigate the incident.

Ald. Matthew O’Shea of the 19th Ward, told the Chicago Sun-Times the shooting was "just another act of senseless violence in our city. We ask everyone run to the police. And to have these offenders so brazen as to shoot at a police station. A woman lost her life tonight outside the 22nd District. There are no words, terribly sad."[1]
