Teens charged with 11 carjackings in August, including 9 in one day

A pair of teenagers have been charged with a total of 17 felonies in connection to 11 armed carjackings in the month of August, including 9 that occurred within a single day, authorities said.

Teens charged with 11 carjackings in August, including 9 in one day

CHICAGO - A pair of teenagers have been charged with a total of 17 felonies in connection to 11 armed carjackings in the month of August, including 9 that occurred within a single day, authorities said.

Chicago Police announced charges Wednesday afternoon against a 17-year-old teenager and a 16-year-old teenager in connection with carjackings in the month of August. They allege the 17-year-old participated in 11 armed carjackings in the month of August, including 9 in a single day, while the 16-year-old participated in four of those carjackings within the same total.

The teens are juveniles and will not be identified, but the 17-year-old was arrested Tuesday in Chicago's Lawn community and the 16-year-old was arrested Tuesday in the South Shore neighborhood.

The 17-year-old is charged as follows:

  • Eleven (11) felony counts – Aggravated Vehicular Hijacking with a Firearm
  • Two (2) felony counts – Criminal Damage/Government Property <$500

Police allege he participated in the following armed carjackings:

  • August 30, 2022 – 8700 block of S. Vincennes Ave. (22nd District); 49-year-old female victim
  • August 20, 2022 – 8000 block of S. Campbell Ave. (8th District); 33-year-old female victim
  • August 20, 2022 – 3400 block of W. 72nd St. (8th District); 58-year-old male victim
  • August 20, 2022 – 2900 block of S. Union Ave. (9th District); 21-year-old female victim
  • August 20, 2022 – 6500 block of S. Kedzie Ave. (8th District); 50-year-old male victim
  • August 20, 2022 – 5600 block of S. Albany Ave. (8th District); 26-year-old male victim
  • August 20, 2022 – 5700 block of S. Richmond St. (8th District); 45-year-old female victim
  • August 20, 2022 – 8400 block of S. Sangamon St. (6th District); 40-year-old female victim
  • August 20, 2022 – 6600 block of S. Artesian Ave. (8th District); 66-year-old female victim
  • August 20, 2022 – 6700 block of S. Washtenaw Ave. (8th District); 33-year-old female victim
  • August 18, 2022 – 6600 block of S. Albany Ave. (8th District); 35-year-old female victim

The 16-year-old is charged as follows:

  • Four (4) felony counts – Aggravated Vehicular Hijacking with a Firearm
  • One (1) felony count – Receive/Possess/Sell Stolen Vehicle
  • One (1) misdemeanor count – Theft Lost/Mislaid/PROP/$500-$10K

Police allege he participated in the following armed carjackings:

  • August 20, 2022 – 6500 block of S. Kedzie Ave. (8th District); 50-year-old male victim
  • August 20, 2022 – 5700 block of S. Richmond St. (8th District); 45-year-old
    female victim
  • August 20, 2022 – 6700 block of S. Washtenaw Ave. (8th District); 33-year-old
    female victim
  • August 20, 2022 – 8600 block of S. Halsted St. (6th District); 43-year-old female victim

The 16-year-old offender was also charged in connection to possession of a vehicle that was reported stolen on, August 20, 2022, in the 2900 block of S. Union Ave. (9th District) from a 21-year-old female victim.

Both of the teens were taken into custody without incident. Their felony bond court date has not yet been set.
