OAK BROOK, Ill. - The Oak Brook Police Department released four audio recordings from 911 operators on the evening of December 23, 2021, when two men who reportedly knew each other had a shootout inside the mall at the height of the Christmas shopping season.[1]

On December 23, 2021, at approximately 5:44 p.m., officers with the Oak Brook Police Department responded to a call of shots fired at the Oak Brook Mall. Upon their arrival, officers found four individuals suffering from gunshot wounds.

Following an investigation into the shooting, it is alleged that two men were in a verbal altercation near the pretzel store inside the Oak Brook Center Mall when both men pulled out a handgun and began shooting at each other. Authorities indicated that the men knew each other prior to the incident, and that the argument began over a prior social media post made by one of the two men.

There is no capture of the violence in any of the recordings, and all the callers remain relatively calm through the situation given the frightening circumstances.

While authorities did not disclose the identities of the callers, it sounds like we hear the voices of two female employees who work directly for one of the nearby stores as they are locking down, a male customer with a large group who heard the gunshots, and a man whose wife was inside the mall at the time of the incident.

The recordings can be heard below.
