Naperville PD release bodycam and dashcam footage of fatal shooting of man with a hatchet

The Naperville Police Department released bodycam and dashcam footage yesterday of an officer involved shooting earlier this month in which an officer fatally shot a man who came at the officer with a hatchet during an unrelated traffic stop.

NAPERVILLE, Ill. — The Naperville Police Department released both bodycam and dashcam footage yesterday of an officer involved shooting earlier this month in which a 22-year-veteran of the department fatally shot a man who came at the officer with a hatchet during an unrelated traffic stop.[1]

The officer was conducting a traffic stop around 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 3, 2022, when an unrelated vehicle pulled up next to the vehicle the officer had pulled over. A man exited the second vehicle and charged the officer with a hatchet in his hand.

The officer fired their gun, striking the man. The man, who was later identified by the DuPage County Coroner's Office as Edward C. Samaan, 28, of Naperville, was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.[2]

The officer, a 22-year-veteran of the Naperville Police Department, was not injured. Naperville officers were issued bodycams only a month prior to the incident.

The DuPage County Metropolitan Emergency Response and Investigative Team and the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office continue to conduct the independent investigation into this incident, police said.
