Man critical after fall from balcony apartments on the Near North Side

NEAR NORTH SIDE, CHICAGO - As police responded to an alleged residential trespass Monday night, a man reportedly fell from a balcony and is in critical condition, authorities said.

The incident happened shortly before 8:00 p.m. near the intersection of W. Elm Street and N. Larrabee in a new building development in the Cabrini Green neighborhood on the Near North Side.

Police said that they were responding to a call of a residential trespass on the above block when they were waved down by witnesses in neighboring apartments. The witnesses reportedly saw a man trying to jump down from the building's fifth (top) floor onto lower balconies.

Witnesses then saw the offender slip and fall to the ground from the third floor.

The Chicago Fire Department took the man to Northwestern hospital where he was listed in critical condition for blunt force trauma to the body. The man was originally believed to be an alleged burglar but that information has not been confirmed by police in the following hours.

Area detectives are currently investigating the incident and no further information is available at this time.
