CHICAGO - A Chicago police officer was shot Wednesday evening on the city's far south side in the Calumet Heights neighborhood, authorities said.

Authorities said that on Wednesday, December 1, 2021, at approximately 8:32 p.m., 4th District officers were conducting what Superintendent Brown called a traffic investigation when they exchanged gunfire with the occupants of the vehicle.

During the exchange, a male officer was shot in the leg. An occupant of the vehicle was also shot in an unknown location.

The officer was transported to the University of Chicago hospital where he was stabilized and police believe his injuries are non-life-threatening.

The offender was taken to an area hospital and is in unknown condition, according to authorities.

Police said the shooting happened at the intersection of 92nd Street and Stony Island Avenue that appeared to be at a Citgo gas station. A dark SUV was crashed at the scene.

A weapon was recovered along with a high capacity magazine.

A second suspect in the incident is currently in custody, Superintendent Brown said. Police do not believe they are looking for any other suspects or persons of interest.
