Attempted kidnapping at grocery store in West Ridge

Police said a 9-year-old girl was at a grocery store shopping with her grandmother when an unknown man grabbed the girl and started running away with her.

Attempted kidnapping at grocery store in West Ridge

Update: The offender is described as a black male, 5’8″-5’10”, 150-170lbs., with short dreadlocks and glasses. He was wearing a white shirt, gray pants, white gym shoes and a camouflage baseball hat.

CHICAGO - Police are looking for a man who attempted to kidnap a young girl in the parking lot of a grocery store in the West Ridge neighborhood this morning.

The incident happened around 9:53 a.m. in the 6600 block of N. Damen at the Cermak Fresh Market grocery store in the West Ridge neighborhood on the city's north side. The grocery store is just east of Warren Park.

Police said a 9-year-old girl was at the grocery store shopping with her grandmother when an unknown man approached. The man grabbed the girl and started running away with her.

According to the local @CPD2024Scanner account on Twitter, the girl was able to get away by biting the man's hand at approximately the 6600 block of N. Ridge Boulevard, which is around the corner and down the street.

After the girl got away, the offender continued running, fleeing southbound on N. Ridge Boulevard.

The 9-year-old girl was not injured.

No one is in custody at this time. Area Three detectives are investigating.
