WASHINGTON HEIGHTS, CHICAGO - Another child is dead tonight after they were shot multiple times on the city's south side, authorities said. The shooting is the latest in a violent New Year's Day across the city to kick off 2023.

The shooting happened shortly after 6:30 p.m. on the 9400 block of S. Wallace in the city's Brainerd neighborhood which is part of the Washington Heights community area on the city's south side.

Police said a 9-year-old boy was shot inside a residence on the above block. The boy was rushed to Comer Children's Hospital but he was pronounced dead later in the evening.

Additional details were slim as authorities continued to investigate, but CPD Commander Sean Joyce told reporters outside the home that there were multiple children and multiple adults both living in the home as well as inside the home at the time of the shooting.

Police had not yet recovered the weapon nor were they definitive on how many times the boy was shot. Local scanner listeners heard the boy was shot three times, but Police did not confirm that information.

There is no one in custody. Area Two Detectives are investigating.
