8-year-old shot and killed in the Douglas neighborhood

An 8-year-old boy was shot and killed in the Douglas neighborhood Monday afternoon, authorities said. The incident comes after a notably violent fall weekend that saw 13 people shot and killed, with an additional 45 wounded. Of those 58 victims, 9 were age 17 and under.

CHICAGO - An 8-year-old boy was shot and killed in the Douglas neighborhood Monday afternoon, authorities said.

The incident happened around 5:48 p.m. Monday afternoon on the 3600 block of S. Rhodes Avenue in the Douglas neighborhood on the city's south side.

The circumstances around the incident are still uncertain but police said an 8-year-old boy was in an apartment in the Lawless Gardens Complex on the above block when he sustained a gunshot wound to the head.

The boy was transported to Comers Children’s Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

There are no offenders in custody at this time. Area One detectives are investigating but police did note that the boy was in a residence with other individuals when the shooting occurred.
