6-year-old critical, shot inside apartment in Woodlawn

CHICAGO - A 6-year-old boy is in critical condition this afternoon after he was shot in the Woodlawn neighborhood this afternoon.

The incident happened around 2:19 p.m. in the 6100 block of S. Vernon Avenue in the Woodlawn neighborhood on the city's south side. The location is approximately one block south of Washington Park, near the intersection of E. 62nd Street and S. Vernon Avenue.

Details at the moment are slim but police said a 6-year-old boy was inside an apartment on the above block when he received a gunshot wound to the back by an as-yet-unknown person. It's unclear if the bullet came in from the outside.

The boy was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital where he is listed in critical condition this afternoon.

Area One Detectives are investigating.
