Update: According to the family, the girl was out celebrating her birthday.


CHICAGO - Police are reporting a 12-year-old girl is fighting for her life after she was shot in the head tonight on the city's south side.



The incident occurred around 7:45 p.m. in the 2300 block of W. 72nd Street in the West Englewood neighborhood, which is part of the Chicago Lawn community area on the city's south side.

Police said a 12-year-old girl was in a vehicle with her family when an unknown offender began firing shots from the street nearby. It is currently unknown if any of her family members were the targets.

The girl reportedly sustained one gunshot wound to the back of her head and was immediately driven to Comers Hospital in critical condition.

No one in custody. Area 1 Detectives are investigating.
