Man in critical condition, stabbed in River North after comment to shoplifter

CHICAGO - Police are reporting a middle-aged man is in critical condition this morning after he was stabbed while trying to intervene against a shoplifter on the city's Near North Side last night.

The incident occurred around 10:38 p.m. in the 600 block of N. Clark Street in the River North neighborhood on the Near North Side, a highly popular area of the city for dining and nightlife.

Police said a currently unidentified male offender entered the Walgreens in the above mentioned block and began taking items from a shelf and concealing them. He was approached by an also unidentified male victim, who police believe to be between 45-50 years of age, and the victim made what was described as "a verbal attempt" to intervene.

Apparently the male shoplifter became irate and produced what police described as "a sharp object." The offender reportedly stabbed the victim multiple times with the sharp object before he fled the scene.

The unidentified victim sustained multiple puncture wounds to the legs and multiple lacerations to his face and neck.

The victim was transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where he was listed in critical condition.

There is no one in custody and Area Three detectives are investigating.
