We’re a fan of the design of the CTA’s new Morgan Station on the Green and Pink lines. It’s a large, iconic structure that somehow still fits the neighborhood without seeming too gaudy.

Its exposed steel and glass canopy stands out, and it’ll be a station that stands the test of time.

Though its price tag was hefty at $38 million, we think it’ll be worth it in the long run, especially since it was driven by the community and most of the cost was paid from local TIF dollars.

So we’re happy to hear that the same architect who designed Morgan, Carol Ross Barney, will take be taking on the South Loop’s new station at Cermak Road.

Ross Barney proved itself capable of creating iconic structures that tie into a community’s identity. That’s just what’s needed at Cermak. The streets around McCormick Place are a bit sad and tired, but with lots of potential. A station anywhere near as strong and iconic would be a boon.

We’re still less than thrilled about the price tag for the Cermak Station, but it seems there’s not much that can be done about that. If we’re spending $50 million on a station, it better be great. With Ross Barney at the helm, we think it will be.

Very excited to hear Ross Barney is on this project!!! Not saying to do this, but maybe something can be done where it has an old fashioned (1940's) aesthetic, but modern design. With any CTA stop there are pro's and cons, but the Cermak stop can quickly take a down turn for criminal activity if safety is not the number one priority. Lighting and clear signage should be important for Cermak and especially the 23rd exit.
