A 14-year-old and 13-year-old were charged with aggravated battery and resisting arrest after a prolonged battle with police Dec. 19 on the 200 block of South State Street. Also, the 17-year-old sister of the 13 year-old, who became involved in the confrontation, was charged with obstructing justice.

At around 2 p.m. police approached the two boys to ask why they weren’t in school. This provoked one of the teens to berate the officer, which caused a large crowd to gather. The officer then tried to calm the teen, at which point the teen made physical contact with the officer’s body by pushing him away with open hands.

The officer tried to arrest the teen, but he resisted and a struggle ensued. The second teen then jumped in by pulling the officer away from the offender. When officers attempted an emergency takedown of the second teen, the second teen bit the officer on the wrist, breaking the skin.

Police then used a closed hand stun to subdue the second teen and place him under arrest. The juvenile ended up with bruises, scrapes and swelling to the area around his right eye. The first teen, meanwhile, suffered a nose injury. Both offenders were treated and released at Mercy Hospital.

The older sister of the 13-year-old was part of the assembled crowd and refused orders by officers to leave. According to the report, the sister proceeded to kick an unmanned squad car. She then took off running, ignoring officer’s orders to stop, before she was eventually apprehended.
