Renter-friendly ordinance before city council

Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley last week announced plans to introduce to the City Council an ordinance to protect renters affected by condominium conversions throughout the city.
A press release from Daley’s office explained that, in good times, the conversion of rental apartments to condos was a good thing for investment but not without issues such as tenant displacement.
If approved at the Sept. 8 City Council meeting, the ordinance would require a registration program for developers to show proper notice was given to renters, change the notice timeline to nine months from four and include relocation assistance to households affected by condo conversions.
