Until further notice, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will accept applications for assistance from those recovering from flooding that inundated Cook County and surrounding counties in late July and early August.
Initial grants from FEMA have been for temporary rental assistance and damage repair, and by Labor Day weekend totaled $108 million.
“Thousands of residents have been adversely affected by the severe weather this year,” said State Coordinating Officer Joseph Klinger. “Recovery is a long process, but seeing disaster assistance getting quickly into the hands of those who need it is a most welcome sight.”
More than 58,000 people in the seven counties affected by the disaster declaration have received help, according to FEMA officials.
Those affected and seeking help should apply as soon as possible at www.disasterassistace.gov or by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362).
