Hundreds of South Loop residents gathered at the Prairie District Neighborhood Alliance’s second Toast of the South Loop on June 4 at the Glessner House at 18th and Prairie.
The point of the event, said PDNA leader Tina Feldstein, was to remind residents to patronize the stores and shops and restaurants that have opened up along neighborhood commercial corridors.
“If we don’t support our local businesses, how are we going to get other businesses to come down here?” she asked. “We won’t.”
Among the restaurants spreading their wares before an estimated 400 people were Panozzo’s Italian Market, Opera and Gioco, Zapatista, Reggie’s, the Weathermark Tavern and more.
Jorge Armando, owner and chef of Café Society, was on hand as well. Armando said he’s now offering homemade pizzas out of his store and delivery as well. The pizza business has a built-in word-of-mouth aspect that’s helped sales.
“The kids talk about it,” he said.
