Robbery with gun threat

A man wearing a baseball cap, khaki pants and a red striped jacket entered a store in the 100 block of N. Michigan June 5 at 11:45 a.m. and browsed for an hour before approaching a clerk and saying, “If you do not give me the money in the drawer, I’m going to show you my gun.” The clerk gave the man $253. He stuffed the money in to a black backpack and fled south on Michigan.
Man robbed at gunpoint
A man was standing near the 300 block of S. Canal June 4 at 8:17 p.m. when another man approached with a gun sticking out of his waistband and said, “Give me your phone.” The victim handed over his phone. The offender then said, “Give me all your money.” The victim complied, handing over $260. The offender fled. The victim flagged down police who toured the area and found the offender walking a couple blocks south on Canal. They arrested the man and transferred him to the 1st District police station for processing. While officers interrogated the man, the victim complained of chest pains and was transported to the hospital for treatment. The victim was OK and was released. The offender was charged with theft.
Bank employee swindles patrons
A manager for a bank located on the 100 block of S. Dearborn called police on June 3 at 1:20 p.m. and reported that one of his employees convinced two customers to redeem their certificates of deposits for cashier’s checks. The employee then took those checks and deposited them to his personal bank account. Police are investigating.
Purse stolen at gunpoint
A woman was walking down the 500 block of S. State June 4 at 12:06 a.m. when a man in a white baseball cap and hoodie approached and said “Give me your purse and your phone,” and flashed a small handgun. The woman handed the offender her purse which held her wallet and cell phone. The offender fled north on State with the purse. Police did not locate the offender.
Boxcutter threats
A man and a woman were moving belongings from a loading dock in their apartment building in the 200 block of N. Columbus June 3 at 4:25 p.m. into a rental van. A man approached and begun to push a Dumpster into their path, blocking their efforts. The man moving his stuff asked the man to wait on moving the Dumpster. The other man ignored him and kept moving the Dumpster. The other man demanded he stop moving the Dumpster. The man moving the Dumpster pulled out a boxcutter and pointed it at the man and woman who were moving and said, “Do you want trouble?” The victims walked away and called police. Officers arrived, spoke to the offender and placed him under arrest for aggravated assault.
Donut store robber cuffed
A man approached a counter at a donut shop located in the 100 block of W. Randolph June 6 at 11:28 a.m. A clerk for the shop asked the man if he was ready. He responded, “Yeah I’m gonna need some ice cream and all the money in the register.” The clerk said, “Excuse me?” The offender responded, “Yeah, I want all the money. If you don’t give it to me, I’m gonna go back there and get it.” The victim told police she thought the man had a gun, so she gave him $420. The man fled. The victim called police who arrived in the area and met a witness who said she just saw the offender get in a cab. Police tracked the offender’s cab down, arrested the man and transported him to the 1st District police station for processing.
Clerk attacked with a tire iron
An intoxicated man entered a convenience store located in the 100 block of E. Madison June 2 at 4:55 p.m. The clerks refused the man service because he was drunk. The man exited the store and then starting punching the store windows. One of the clerks went outside and tried to restrain the offender from breaking the glass. The offender then ran to a nearby car and pulled out a tire iron. He attacked one of the clerks, striking him in the left wrist, causing a laceration and some bruising. The other clerk and a nearby witness were able to wrestle the tire iron from the offender and detain him. The victims called police, who arrived, arrested the man and charged him with aggravated assault.
