it turns out our CTA station is number one in crime

By the time I got going this morning, everyone was talking about it: for the last three years, our CTA station at Roosevelt between State and Wabash, serving Green, Orange and Red Line riders has more crime than any other in the city. Great news, huh? We beat 'em all. The bad guys have made us First. Uno. Number 1.
So says the Tribune.
This comes on the heels of what I reported in a column a few weeks ago: that there were a ton of crime reports, like hundreds, within a three-month period in front of the Walgreens just steps away from this now infamous "L" station. So many that Walgreens was denied a packaged liquor license by the City licensing body.
What's the neighborhood coming to? The neighborhood right out my door!
I am hoping what's pushing the numbers is a lot of turnstile jumping. After all, with the Red, Green (both going in two directions) and Orange Line trains all converging, there are a lot of turnstiles and there must be a lot of accompanying turnstile jumping, right? Better than iPhone grabbing, armed robbery, shooting and assaults, right?
In any case, when snapping this picture just outside the station, all I could think was, TAKE THIS PICTURE FAST. Then put away your sought after picture-taking device. Cause there must be a lot of bums after it right here, right now--at the most crime-ridden station for miles around.

Is this of any shock to anyone? Did we really need a study to figure this out? It is no mystery that the red and green line got to the high crime areas of the south side and west side. We just happen to be in the middle.
