Costco, the popular wholesale retailer that sells everything from tires to toilet paper in massive packages, is ready to open a store on the Near West Side next Thursday, June 28.
Located at the intersection of Ashland Avenue and 14th Street, the store will be Costcoís second in the city of Chicago. Despite its location on the Near West Side in the Illinois Medical District, Costco is labeling the store its South Loop outpost. Their first store is on the western edge of Lincoln Park, on Clybourn Avenue near Diversey Parkway and Damen Avenue.
The new Costco measures 161,000 square feet, and will offer gas, a bakery, a deli and an eye doctor as well as the typical bulk paper towels and fruit snacks.
The store is getting a property tax break worth about $2.5 million over the next 12 years through a deal reached with the city council in January 2011.
Lease negotiations for the site hit a snag last year when the Illinois Medical District, a state-controlled body thatís in financial trouble, wanted to fine-tune the lease. According to Ald. Bob Fioretti (2nd), the Medical District originally wanted to make nearly 1,000 changes to the proposed lease, and Costco balked before the governorís office stepped in to help out.
Before construction, Costco touted the fact that the store would create 125 new jobs with a living wage.
