A furry West Loop love story

As bridesmaids go, Maxie and Tess were fairly low-maintenance. They didn’t kvetch about unflattering chiffon dresses or uncomfortable heels. Truth be told, they wore nothing, although Tess sported a colorful choker.
Don’t get the wrong idea—this wasn’t a swinger wedding. Maxie is a six-year-old Rhodesian Ridgeback-Rottweiler. Tess is a four-year-old Greyhound.
You see, bride and groom Aki Mitsunaga and Michael Kennedy are dog lovers. The West Loop couple has visited the Mary Bartelme Park dog play area for two years.
There are many, many dogs running through the play area, but Aki and Michael formed a special bond with Maxie and Tess. So it was fitting that their wedding party was made up of two dogs.
“We love dogs, so we thought it would be fun to include them in our special day,” Kennedy said. Alas, Kennedy and Mitsunaga live in Presidential Tower, where dogs are not welcome. Hence, Maxie and Tess played surrogates.
As the bride, groom and furry attendants posed for wedding pictures, the bridesmaids’ parents watched with pride. Tracey Stone (Maxie) and Donna Masterson (Tess) said preparations did not include a trip to the salon.
“Maxie was going to have her hair done this afternoon, but she decided to take a nap instead,” said Stone. “She was just happy to get a treat—being the hedonist she is.”
