House panel votes to boot Derrick Smith
Indicted state rep could still be reelected in November

Update Friday, July 20:
Original story:
Derrick Smith, the Near West state rep accused of taking a $7,000 bribe, could soon be kicked out of the Illinois House.
According to the Chicago Tribune, a house panel recommended on Thursday that Smith be expelled from the House.
Smith did not attend the panel’s hearing, according to the Tribune, and several members pointed to that as a reason why he should be expelled.
The full House still must vote for Smith to be booted, but that could happen soon if Gov. Pat Quinn calls the legislature back to find a solution to the state’s pension woes.
Regardless of the outcome in the house, Smith will still be on the ballot and could be back in the house if he wins November’s election. Democrats have picked Todd Stroger's former chief of staff Lance Tyson to run against Smith as a third-party candidate this fall; a Republican candidate was recently removed from the ballot.
