Felony Franks closes down

Jim Andrews opened a hot-dog stand on the West Side of Chicago in 2009 to give ex-offenders a place to work. But now, after almost three years of ups and downs, Andrews finally had to call it quits. His restaurant, Felony Franks, ceased operation Wednesday afternoon. "I feel bad," Andrews said. "But I had a talk with the guys."

Morgan 'L' designer will take on Cermak

First designs for South Loop station could come in August

The CTA’s new ‘L’ station planned for Cermak Road on the Green Line will be designed by the same team that sculpted the just-opened Morgan Station, the architect confirmed this week. The station, budgeted to cost $50 million, will serve McCormick Place and the planned Motor Row entertainment district that’ll run down Michigan Avenue between Cermak and the Stevenson.

Wheeler Mansion to host farmers market Wednesday nights starting next week

The South Loop is getting a new farmers market this year, but it’s not going to Grant Park, where officials were talking about 12 months ago. Plans for a market on South Michigan Avenue are officially dead, according to a rep for Bensidoun USA, the company that hoped to organize a market there. Leslie Cahill, the company’s Midwest manager, said they couldn’t come to an agreement on a contract with the park district.

City boos Walgreens' booze

You know the old adage, one never knows what’s going on right outside their front door? Well, I just found out in my case it’s true. I have in my possession the recent decision of the City of Chicago License Appeal Commission that affirmed the decision of the City of Chicago Liquor Commission, which denied Walgreens at Roosevelt and State the right to sell packaged liquor in its store. As a neighbor of Walgreens, reading the decision is a wild ride.

New exhibit looks at full span of iconic modern artist's career

You can find Claude Monet’s famous “Haystacks” paintings in the impressionist wing of the Art Institute of Chicago. The timeless series seems to show up in whatever art museum I visit, no matter what city I’m in. They’re instantly recognizable as classic Monets. But the iconic haystacks get a pop twist in the new Roy Lichtenstein exhibit, where they hang beside Lichtenstein’s takes on Mondrain and Picasso.
