Schools need to represent community

The University Village Association organized a community effort seventeen months ago to address the issue of a lack of access in our community to quality public education in a socioeconomically diverse learning environment. Aldermen Danny Solis and Bob Fioretti have worked diligently on education issues in their wards. We have worked closely with both of them to determine how to improve all of the schools here and to increase access to education.

Having been in Brooklyn and Manhattan during the great Boxing Day dump of 2010, I saw two major differences between NYC and Chicago. First, Chicago plows better and sooner despite NYC sanitation trucks morphing into snow plows at the fall of a flurry.

Community left out of school inequity issue

As this week’s Chicago Journal goes to print, the Chicago Board of Education may be voting on a recommendation by outgoing CEO Ron Huberman to expand Andrew Jackson Language Academy (Jackson) into the unused Jefferson school building on West Fillmore.

I am a resident of the University Village (I live on Fillmore) and I teach at Smyth Magnet School. I was particularly saddened (as were about 1,500 other staff, students, and parents) to read your article about Smyth “not being good enough” for families in our community.

I know about Smyth. Smyth is a low performing school and always have been. Smyth was the lowest performing school when Ris, Jefferson, Medill, and Gladstone was open.
