Don’t raise my taxes!

In response to the article “Fearing the worst” and editorial “Raise our taxes. Do it now.” in the June 25 edition of Chicago Journal, I say “no” to higher taxes.

Many people are without jobs, and those who still have jobs have had to take salary cuts. Why should I give the folks in Springfield, who obviously don’t know how to create and balance a budget, more of my (and your) hard-earned money? If workers in Illinois are taking salary cuts of up to 20 percent and more, why aren’t the folks in Springfield doing the same?

Sure, the emotional arguments about people going without services pulls at our hearts, but where does this all end? How can a state government be taken seriously when they never put forth a realistic budget? Perhaps it is time for families, churches, and charities, with an emphasis on families, to step in the gap. Perhaps some people will suffer, but the solution isn’t giving Springfield more of my money to mismanage.

When I don’t have enough money to do what I want, I make cuts, as tough as that is, but that’s life; you can’t always get what you want. And sometimes, you don’t even get what you need.
