Put South Loop market on Saturday
05/04/2011
We get what the Chicago Park District is trying to do by putting the new Grant Park farmers market on a Friday. Tapping into the workforce in town for the weekend is a fine idea, and folks may enjoy heading over to pick up a loaf of bread or some fruit.

With less than a month left in his tenure, the countdown clock to the end of Mayor Richard M. Daley’s tenure as Chicago’s sultan is ticking. Here at Chicago Journal, we’ll miss him. Yes, I know that’s not the kind of statement you often expect to read in the news media that has so often clashed with Hizzoner, but we have a good reason. Really. We swear.

Richard M. Daley’s favorite alderman will live to see another mayor after all. Appointed by Daley in 1996, Danny Solis was the mayor’s go-to man in the city council. Solis could be counted on to vote in lock-step with the mayor on anything from parking meters to big-box store living wages.

We love Goose Island beer here at Chicago Journal and Skyline. It’s a fact. From 312 to Matilda, from their India Pale Ale to Harvest Ale, we can’t resist snagging a 12-pack every now and again. So when we heard the company had been bought by beer monolith Anheuser-Busch, we were surprised, and maybe even a little bit shocked.

Fred Anderson park an honor
03/23/2011
It’s a tragedy that Fred Anderson’s Velvet Lounge shut down last December, so soon after his death. The man deserves better than to have his marquee establishment fall apart mere months after his death in what was allegedly “a family dispute,” according to Chicago Tribune jazz critic Howard Reich.

Lessons from a political game
03/16/2011
Really, it seems silly to think it could have happened any other way than this. State Sen. Rickey Hendon was such a charismatic figure in his 5th District seat, such a staple in the black community and so popular amongst his colleagues. If he was leaving so suddenly, the process of replacing him had to be interesting.

Wal-Mart’s announcement last week of a new West Loop grocery store made news around the city. The controversial grocer has been doing battle to get a foothold in the city, and a location so close to downtown caught many off guard. With so many vicious battles being fought over the massive warehouse-like stores set for the West and South sides, the store’s announcement that it was simply moving in was a slick move.

As longtime State Sen. Rickey Hendon leaves his 5th District post, it’s time again for that most sacred of Chicago traditions: the appointment of the successor.

Chicago aldermen to star in new Rahm-com
02/23/2011
After six months of campaigning, Chicago finally has a new mayor this week. It’s no surprise, really, that Rahm Emanuel won the mayoral election. Since Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart dropped out of the race early on, it quickly became apparent that there wasn’t a candidate — or a political organization — that could knock Emanuel off his track.
