We had a chance to stop by the Ping Tom Park expansion on Monday, the same day Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced his initiative to build four brand new boathouses along the river across the city - including one right here in Chinatown.

Attorney General Lisa Madigan's crackdown on the H. Kramer copper smelting company is a welcome contribution to the assault on Pilsen's polluters. After years of activists trying in vain to get something done in the community, politicians finally seem to think it's a good idea to take care of this issue.

We went to the dedication ceremony for Mary Bartelme Park’s historic marker on Tuesday night, and it was a fine ceremony all around. Plenty of important and illustrious people were on hand to celebrate a year of the park’s existence and commemorate the woman it was named after.
Community justice center a boon

There were quite a few elected officials on hand Tuesday in University Village to trumpet the opening of the State’s Attorney’s new community justice center. They boasted that the new facility would help boost the connection between officials and the public, helping fight crime by making people feel more comfortable with those who are fighting for them in court.

There’s only one word for plans for the old post office: insane. Simply put, the idea of constructing the would-be tallest building in North America - and combining it with six other high rises - is ridiculous. There’s nowhere near that much demand for any kind of space in Chicago right now.

Some businesses are good. Some businesses are bad. Some businesses are misunderstood. But some businesses just need to learn when to get the heck out. Plush, the "restaurant that acts like a nightclub" in the middle of the West Loop, falls into the last category. And thankfully, they seem to have gotten the message.

It's been a few months since Danny Solis had his close call. In a tight race that saw him losing almost all of Pilsen by an astonishing margin, Solis barely squeaked out a win over his two-time rival, Cuahutemoc Morfin.
