Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy’s plan to shutter police stations around the city is making a lot of people angry.

Folks in this town are attached to their cops. They see them as a direct factor in their personal safety.

That’s probably true. But we find it hard to believe that closing a police station will have a massive impact on neighborhood safety — assuming McCarthy keeps his word and keeps all the cops in the new merged districts.

It’s possible response times might go down a bit on the very edges of the new district. For big calling-all-cars type incidents, there’ll still be some cops dispatched directly from the police station, and 14th and Blue Island isn’t exactly close to Ukrainian Village in the new 12th District.

However, most cops aren’t at the police station. Most are out on the street. And if McCarthy truly pushes “beat integrity,” then cops should be spread out evenly already.

As for Chicago Journal’s home turf, we doubt it’ll change things too much on the Near West Side, which was already split between the two districts. However, it might make coordinating operations easier in that up-and-coming area — a good thing for everybody.
