We were skeptical when we heard about the Velvet Lounge’s reopening towards the end of last year, and we were admittedly a bit harsh in our first look at plans to reopen the club.

But we stopped into the reborn club this weekend for its Sunday night jazz and had a good time.

The place looks good, and the building owner Dan Kravetz and the club’s new ownership have done a good job of revamping it.

On stage, Chuck-A-Luck and the Band of Legends grooved through a few renditions of Miles Davis classics, and yes, even that classic elevator music tune “Girl From Ipanema.”

It was a nice atmosphere, and the musicians seemed genuinely excited to be playing there, even if it was just for tips.

There was just one thing missing: People. Only a few folks were scattered throughout the audience, and only a few were paying attention.

It’s a shame. Though it may not be what it once was, the Velvet Lounge is still a South Loop landmark, and it deserves support from the community.

So if you’re looking for something to do, go visit them this Sunday. Buy a drink, and maybe even a slice of pizza. Listen to some talented musicians doing what they love. And hey, if you have a good time, come back again.

The South Loop’s cultural institutions depend on our support to thrive. We’ll get back what we put into them.
