Beautiful day on Western

The Near West Side Chamber of Commerce’s sidewalk sale last week was great.
When we stopped by to check out the scene, the tent they’d set up on a vacant lot at Western and Monroe wasn’t exactly hopping. But it was good-looking.
The vendors all seemed to be in good cheer, and what small amount of foot traffic did come past seemed to be interested. It’s hard to miss a big white tent on Western, after all.
These days, it seems like that part of town is really starting to gain momentum. With every smiling boutique owner who comes to the strip and every big-name business that drops in a new location, there’s a growing sense of optimism.
Pete’s Fresh Market, which should be breaking ground at the site soon, could bring the neighborhood to its tipping point. All that foot traffic from a swanky new grocery store could very well be the catalyst that gets Western really moving and lights up the economy.
In the next few weeks, we should find out even more about what’s coming at Pete’s. There’s a neighborhood meeting on June 27 where the store’s manager Charles Poulkis (there’s a manager!) will provide an update on Pete’s progress.
We’re excited for what’s next. Everyone on the Near West Side should be, too.
