New Chicago bike lanes a fine ride

The new walled-off bike lanes on Kinzie look fantastic, and it’s shocking to see city government moving this quickly.
When Ald. Brendan Reilly announced the new lanes in his newsletter last Friday night, it seemed like a cool idea. But we didn’t expect to see things move this quickly.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel has clearly made biking as big a priority as his predecessor, and it’s nice to see this very cool project get moving. Anyone hoping to ride their bikes up to Wicker Park from the South Loop or Fulton River District (a nice ride for a sunny summer afternoon, by the way) should try out this route.
Our one concern is whether businesses in the neighborhood were taken into account. Blommer Chocolate has a tendency to park its trucks right in the middle of the lanes, and we’re not quite sure how that will play out at this point.
But get out there and ride — let’s hope more of these are coming soon.
