West Loop scores with HQ relocation

The West Loop just got a major shot in the arm. On Monday, the popular T-shirt company Threadless announced they’d like to move their headquarters from Ravenswood to 1260 W. Madison.

This is a tremendous win for the neighborhood, which will see an innovative firm with a growing global following bring around 50 full-time employees to Madison Street.

It’s axiomatic that those workers will spend money in local shops, bars and restaurants, helping business owners meet tough bottom lines during the ongoing economic uncertainty.

But that boost isn’t the half of it. Broadly speaking, the move serves to confirm the West Loop as a neighborhood renowned for its dynamic creative-industry businesses. Those range from tiny art galleries and independent photographers to such big players as Harpo Studios and Towers Productions. These firms say this is a place with panache. Threadless adds to the sentiment.

To us, this is a no-lose proposition, and we look forward to seeing how Threadless builds out the space and grows into the neighborhood. We’re confident they’ll add a visually punchy lift to the Madison-side façade of the old FedEx building they’re moving into — something that will serve their needs and draw praise from nearby residents.

The disappointment that some community members feel about the fact that the 90-foot-tall, 318-unit condo building the previous owners of 1260 W. Madison had planned for the site is misplaced. Economic reality — an oversaturated condo market, high unemployment, credit worries — means that new development simply isn’t possible right now.

We salute the community members, Ald. Burnett (27th) and Pickus Co. for coming to the aforementioned development plan. They put in a lot of diligent work and strenuously negotiated. But it’s time to move on.

The city council should downzone this property without delay. West Loop residents should plan to welcome the newest member of the local business community.
