We’re big fans of the Near South sports leagues. For the past five years, Near South Little League has been a rollicking success in the South Loop; as well as Near South Soccer, for the past seven.

So we’re really excited that this program keeps expanding, and that they’ll begin to offer softball this fall.

They’re a fantastic program, and we’ve never heard anyone say anything ill about it. Little league head honcho Jim Navarre helped get a fantastic grant that cleaned up their home base, Dunbar Park in Bronzeville, souping up the fields and giving them a brand new neighboring playground.

He also helps kids who can’t quite get the cash to join with the finances.

Girls were allowed to play baseball before — and some did it quite well. But it’s great that they’ll finally get a program of their own.

Pop by St. Mary’s Church on Saturday afternoon between 1 and 3 p.m. and check out all three.
