Columbia Media Production Center appears to be a triumph of design and function.
An elegant mix of steel, concrete and glass from the always impressive studios of architect Jeanne Gang, the center will serve Columbia’s student and faculty well. We can only hope that it invigorates movie making and game design — and who knows what else? — to boost those industries locally.
South Loop neighbors should appreciate the building as a gem. Ancillary effects may include more retail in the area. How about a new coffee shop serving Columbia’s folks, police officers from the 1st District (whose headquarters are just south of the new center) and South Loop condo dwellers?
That’s a mix we’d like to see.
Congratulations to Columbia on a successful new building.
