We went to the dedication ceremony for Mary Bartelme Park’s historic marker on Tuesday night, and it was a fine ceremony all around. Plenty of important and illustrious people were on hand to celebrate a year of the park’s existence and commemorate the woman it was named after.

Seismic political changes are occurring unnoticed. Racial minorities have always been important in Chicago elections, but population changes now have profound effects on national politics as well. Minorities helped Barack Obama win the White House and Democrats control Congress until their setback in 2010 midterm elections.

There were quite a few elected officials on hand Tuesday in University Village to trumpet the opening of the State’s Attorney’s new community justice center. They boasted that the new facility would help boost the connection between officials and the public, helping fight crime by making people feel more comfortable with those who are fighting for them in court.

There has already been a lot of discussion about the new Mariano's grocery store proposed for the corner of Halsted and Monroe streets - most of which centers around $7 million the city is giving the project from our real estate taxes.

One word for the old post office plan: insane

There’s only one word for plans for the old post office: insane. Simply put, the idea of constructing the would-be tallest building in North America - and combining it with six other high rises - is ridiculous. There’s nowhere near that much demand for any kind of space in Chicago right now.

I’ve lived through a number of crime waves since moving to the South Loop 17 years ago. The first one, early on, was a raft of Weber Grills that were stolen out of our neighborhood backyards.

I cannot help but get impatient with the chronic naysayers on a casino in downtown Chicago. I understand the opposition of the churches, with bingo and casino night fundraisers fearing revenue loss. Most churches draw from their members to attend these events. One new Chicago casino could have only a marginal effect on them. There already are many choices.
