Market daze

It’s too bad about the Grant Park farmers market. The idea had a lot of promise and it was a neat location, but in the end, it just couldn’t get done this year.
When we heard the park district and Bensidoun USA talking about the plans back in May, everything seemed like it was rolling along smoothly and the market would be able to open at the beginning of this summer. That, unfortunately, was far from the truth.
Bensidoun’s legal wrangling with the park district carried on all summer, as the park district’s concession company apparently had no idea how to deal with a farmers market like Bensidoun.
The blame for this should fall squarely on the park district, which failed to adjust its contract in time for the market this summer.
We hope there’s really been a breakthrough, as Bensidoun says, because this market would be another great asset for Grant Park and the South Loop as a whole.
