As much as reporters like to think so, we don’t know everything.

For however many questions we may ask, it’s hard to get to the bottom of the barrel of every single thing.

It was a problem that was painfully obvious when Derrick Smith was indicted last week on charges of accepting a bribe, just days after we had endorsed him in Chicago Journal.

Whether it’s true or not, it’s an unacceptable charge to have hanging over the head of a public official.

So, we hereby retract our endorsement of Derrick Smith for state representative of the Illinois’ 10th District.

His opponent, Tom Swiss, is a former Republican running as a Democrat. We’re skeptical of the reasons behind the switch, and wish he would just be honest with voters (a billboard with his name and a black construction worker’s face isn’t helping him on that front, either).

However, given the current circumstances, we think he’s better than Smith. Tom Swiss is hereby endorsed.

We are no longer accepting new comments on ChicagoJournal.com

If anyone should be upset, are the people who voted for Smith during early voting. That a cue from Chicago Sun-Times. Don't endorse anyone. Including someone who decides to switch parties without given any reasons.

Why would you feel it necessary to endorse at all? Your "endorsement" of Swiss seems to be "he wasn't indicted." THAT is an indictment of your standards for endorsing. Swiss's campaign has been deceitful from the start. Has he gotten "better" since his opponent was indicted?
