Lance Bartel has never shaken a cup. Just two years ago, he was working as a chief on board for a rail company, monitoring customer safety and the trains’ efficiency. With his wife, their household made $83,000 a year. On March 18, 2010, his life came to a screeching stop, Bartel said, when a drunk driver crashed into and killed his 48-year-old, eight-months pregnant wife and two sons, at five and three years old.

After a long and unsuccessful battle, Ald Walter Burnett (27th) said he will wait until Mayor Richard Daley leaves office to resuscitate the "Sweet Home Chicago" ordinance, legislation that requires Tax Increment Finance money go to affordable housing.

A 35-story South Loop high-rise that stood completely vacant for 18 months will start renting out all its 333 units — units that were originally supposed to be sold as condos. ST Residential, the property owner of the Lexington Park building at 2138 S. Indiana Ave., announced the decision last week.

South Loop musical icon Fred Anderson, who died last summer, may get a very furry tribute from Chicago. At a concert Tuesday night at the Jazz Showcase to honor what would have been Anderson’s 81st birthday, Ald. Bob Fioretti (2nd) announced he was proposing to name a new dog-focused park at 16th Street and Wabash Avenue after Anderson.

Eighteen Chicago restaurants honored with special Italian seal

Italy turned 150, and 18 Chicago-area restaurants were granted a special Italian seal of approval for their cuisine at an awards dinner March 17 held at the Italian-American Sports Hall of Fame, 1431 W. Taylor St. The “Ospitalita Italiana” seal was given to the restaurants by the Italian government, certifying them as authentically Italian, and was part of the 150th anniversary celebration of the unification of Italy.

Facing an April 5 runoff, 25th Ward Ald. Danny Solis announced last week that he not only supports but will co-sponsor the Clean Power Ordinance, legislation intended to sharply curtail air pollution from the Fisk coal-fired power plant in Pilsen and the Crawford coal plant in Little Village.
