Sunday will be the last time 70 parishioners of South Loop Community Church settle into their seats at the Sherwood Auditorium in the 1300 block of South Michigan Avenue — a tight fit for their gathering. The temporary Sunday service quarters, used for nine years, will soon be left behind for life in a more inclusive whole-church space on South State Street.

Pastor Tom Kubiak described his church’s new space at 1347 S. State St., a largely residential block, as a “blessing.” The assembly area with office and class space surrounding it will integrate a church that today operates from two locations — Sherwood Auditorium for worship and the Loop for office space, he said.

The city this week granted the conditional use permit for use of the brick and timber structure as a church “and we can now congregate,” Kubiak said. The church’s planned use of the State Street location had full aldermanic and citizen advisory committee support, he said.

Kubiak said his church is not a new one, nor is it a commuter church. That South Loop Community Church is moving into a more permanent location shows a commitment to this neighborhood and those surrounding. “We are local,” he said.

The first service is expected to be held at the State Street location on Sept. 5.
