Police listed what the Chicago Journal counted to be 172 names of protesters taken into custody at the 1st District police station on the evening of Oct. 15 for staying in Grant Park after its 11 p.m. closing time. According to the police report, protestors gathered around 431. S. Michigan Ave. in Grant Park, “with tents and signs complaining about the government.”
The Chicago Park District complained that the protestors were in the park after 11 p.m. and police responded with a warning over the squad’s public address system that they would be arrested if they did not leave.
A police commander then personally gave each arrestee a warning and asked if they had a tent they wanted to claim. Each arrestee said no to this and several arrestees remained inside tents and refused to leave. The tents were then dismantled and the arrestees were taken into the 1st District station.
Police will inventory the tents and other miscellaneous property as found property.
Downtown bank robberies
Two downtown banks were robbed last week. One bank — Chicago Community Bank, at 52 E. Lake St. — was robbed Oct. 12 for the second time in two weeks.
In the Chicago Community Bank robbery, a man entered the bank at around 1:15 afternoon and approached the teller window. He handed a somewhat incoherent note to the teller that read, in part, “I have a gun and a bomb.” The man then stated to the teller, “Give me everything — I have a gun and a bomb on me. Hand over all the currency in the drawer.”
The teller then handed over all the currency in the drawer, an unknown amount, and the offender ran away on foot, leaving the note behind. Two witnesses observed the offender leaving the bank with the money in hand. FBI agents arrived at the bank by afternoon.
In a separate incident, a man robbed U.S. Bank at 360 N. Michigan Ave. at 9:55 in the morning Oct. 14. The man went to the counter, filled out paperwork and then approached the bank teller with a note that read, “I have a gun give your money.” The offender then told the teller, “I have a gun, give me your money or I will shoot you.”
The victim then gave the offender money, which he placed in a black bag that he was carrying. The offender then fled through the front door and went south on Michigan Avenue.
A witness said that he saw the offender get on the CTA 177 bus travelling southbound on Michigan Ave. The bus was stopped at Adams and Wabash, but the offender was not on the bus.
Armed robbery
Two men robbed a victim at knifepoint on the sidewalk on the 400 block of South Clark Street Oct. 15 at around 11:30 p.m. The first offender put the victim against a wall and displayed a silver knife while the second offender said, “You know what’s up. Give up your s***.”
The victim handed over his wallet, which had $64 and miscellaneous IDs. The offenders fled northbound.
Off-duty cop burglarized at gym
An off-duty police officer working out at XSport Fitness, 819 S. State St., on the afternoon of Oct. 17 returned to his gym locker to find it broken into and multiple police-related items stolen. This included a 9mm blue steel pistol. Also missing from the locker was a police star, Chicago Police ID, several credit cards, a gun registration card and the victim’s Illinois driver’s license.
$60,000 in foreign cash stolen on train
A man robbed on a CTA train traveling around 100 W. Lake St. on Oct. 16 reported $60,000 worth of Belarusian rubles stolen. An unknown offender swiped a bag that besides the Belarusian rubles included $140 in U.S. currency, numerous electronics items including an Amazon Kindle, iPod Nano and Sony Walkman as well as a copy of the New Testament.
This summary contains information taken from the crime reports and arrest records of the 1st District of the Chicago Police Department. Anyone named has only been charged with a crime. The cases have not yet been adjudicated
