Police apprehended two suspects who allegedly pulled out a knife to steal a woman’s purse at the 100 S. Columbus Dr. parking lot the afternoon of Aug. 22. One of the offenders, a 16-year-old, was charged with aggravated assault after he subsequently waved a knife at police.
Three offenders walked up the victim and one stated, “Give me your purse.” The victim at first held on to the purse — but the 16 year-old then brandished a knife and cut off the purse strap.
The offenders fled, but police who arrived on the scene were provided a description of the offenders — and then spotted them on the corner of Congress Parkway and State Street. A foot chase ensued and one of the three offenders escaped, But police caught the other two offenders and recovered the victim’s wallet.
At the first district police station, the 16-year-old displayed a knife and began swinging it in the officer’s direction. Officers demanded the offender drop the knife, but he continued to swing it. Then an officer performed an elbow strike about the face of the 16-year-old and another officer performed a knee strike. Police then did an emergency takedown, gained possession of the knife and handcuffed the listed offender without further incident.
Seven arrested in immigrations rights protest
Police arrested seven protesters — all between the ages of 18 and 26 and associated with the Illinois Coalition for Immigration and Refugee Rights — for violating the public peace at a town hall meeting Aug. 17 at 661 W. Washington Blvd. held by U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement.
A small portion of the group wasn’t permitted to enter the premise due to their loud and aggressive action. The group first marched to the intersection of Jefferson and Desplaines streets to block traffic. The group was given orders to disperse and they proceeded to block all traffic on the off-ramp for the 90/94 interstate exit at Washington. The offenders were given lawful orders to disperse on “numerous occasions” and those who did not comply were put in police custody.
Resisting arrest outside bar
Willie Sanders, 36, of Country Club Hills, and Charles Woodhouse, 36, of Chicago, were both charged for obstructing justice outside the The Scout at 1300 S. Wabash Ave. The incident happened at around two in the morning on Aug. 21.
Police arrived at the bar after receiving a complaint that the two suspects had threatened to shoot up the establishment. The suspects had been removed from the bar after inappropriately touching a waitress. Police told Sanders to surrender his license and he repeatedly refused. Police then forcibly removed Sanders from his vehicle and placed him into custody. At this time, Sanders became combative by stiffening his arms.
Once Sanders was placed into custody, Woodhouse approached the officers and began to interfere with the police investigation. Police threatened to place Sanders into custody, at which time the offender started to swing his arms and body to resist being put into handcuffs.
Police arrived on the scene to perform an emergency takedown of Woodhouse, using dry stuns to place the subject into custody.
This summary contains information taken from the crime reports and arrest records of the 1st District of the Chicago Police Department. Anyone named has only been charged with a crime. The cases have not yet been adjudicated.
