Police were driving through a back alley near 1500 W. Taylor July 30 at 8:06 p.m. when a woman approached and said she saw two men break into a black Acura Integra parked nearby and drive away.

The woman told police that the owner of the stolen car was currently following the men in another car and that he was currently at Ashland and Roosevelt. The witness gave police the owner’s cell phone number. They called the owner and then radioed a description of the offenders and the stolen car to nearby units.

A separate police unit recognized the car on the 3100 block of Douglas when the driver failed to use a turn signal while making a left turn. Police pulled alongside the vehicle and identified the two men as matching the witness and owner’s description of the thieves.

Police turned on their sirens and attempted to curb the vehicle. The offender fled west in the Acura. The police vehicle suddenly died during the chase and was inoperable. Police radioed ahead to a nearby unit, who found one of the men who was driving the Acura fleeing on foot being followed by the owner of the Acura, also on foot. The offender then stopped and punched the Acura owner. The offender fell to the ground and was detained by police.

During investigation, the witness told police he had left his keys in the ignition of his car while he ran in to a nearby restaurant to pick up some food he had to deliver. The offender told police he was riding his bike near Taylor looking for a car to steal when he saw the Acura with keys in its ignition. He gave his bike to a girl in a nearby park and then walked back to the car, jumped in and drove off.

He also told police that he doesn’t sell drugs, so he steals cars to sell for money.
