A man returned to his apartment in the 700 block of S. Federal July 22 at 10:30 a.m. to find that someone had pried open his door, broken his lock and removed a four-piece dining room set and a leather computer chair. The head engineer for the building had removed the lock so police could not dust it for fingerprints.

Ex-employee suspected in attack

A woman received several anonymous phone calls while she was working at a restaurant in the 500 block of S. Columbus July 22 at 10:35 a.m. before she heard a knock at the door. When she opened the door, a man wearing a face mask and dressed in black grabbed her by the face and pushed her back into the restaurant and down on the ground. When she was on the ground, the man started hitting her in the head and body with a small baseball bat. She began screaming for help, at which time the man attacking her fled. Witnesses told police they saw the man run east across Lake Shore Drive while removing his sweatpants and a hoodie. The man then jumped on a bike and rode off wearing a black shirt, black shorts, yellow earrings, and knee high socks. The victim told police the witnesses’ description matched that of a former employee of the restaurant who was fired two weeks earlier for stealing. Police recovered the offender’s dropped clothing and the woman was taken to the hospital for treatment. There had been no arrests made at the time of the report.

Dust-up on Michigan Avenue

A man was blocking the sidewalk in the 1100 block of S. Michigan July 19 at 12:05 a.m. when another man asked him to move. The man blocking the way struck the other man on the right side of his body with his fist. Police arrived and found the offender irate and yelling. The victim refused to sign complaints against the offender and refused medical attention.

Three men robbed on State

Three men were walking near the 200 block of N. State July 23 at 3:40 p.m. when a man wearing blue jeans and a blue shirt approached and said, “I got those iPads.” The three men told the other man to get away. The other man responded, “Give me your f— money. If you don’t I will shoot your asses.” The three men handed over a total of $110 from their pockets and the offender fled north on State. Police toured the area, but did not locate the offender.

Music-and-GPS grab

A man returned to his 2010 Toyota Corolla parked in the 1200 block of S. Michigan on July 25 at 7:30 p.m. and found someone had broken his car window and stolen $130 worth of compact discs and his GPS unit.

Cell phone stolen

A woman was waiting on a CTA train platform near the 100 block of E. Roosevelt July 23 at 11 p.m. when a man came up to her with his hand underneath his hoodie, implying he had a handgun, and said, “Gimme your money.” The woman told the man she did not have any money, but that she had a cell phone. The offender replied, “Give me your cell phone.” The woman handed it over and fled. A CTA supervisor notified police of the incident. They did not locate the offender.

Sick woman attacks paramedics

Fire department paramedics picked up a sick woman in the 600 block of S. State July 22 at 9:15 p.m. As they were transporting her to the hospital, she started getting combative and scratched one of the paramedics. The paramedics called police. The paramedic tried to subdue her, but she bit him on his left knuckle, leaving a laceration. She then scratched his left arm. A police officer arrived and handcuffed the offender to her bed in the ambulance. They transported the woman to the hospital where she scratched the paramedic again, this time in his mouth with a “fish hook” type action with her finger. The hospital eventually subdued the woman for treatment.

Bike damaged

A woman went to retrieve her bike, which she had parked in an apartment building garage in the 1400 block of S. State on July 22 and found someone had removed a tire from the bike and damaged her gears. The woman told police that an arrest had recently been made of an offender who had supposedly stolen another tenant’s bicycle, and believes the incidents may be related.
