More than 1,700 pairs of what police said were fake Nike gym shoes were removed from a retail outlet in the 600 block of W. Roosevelt on July 16.
Tactical team officers from the 1st District executing a search warrant found, upon entering the store, nearly 115 cardboard boxes filled with the alleged counterfeited shoes, which included Air Jordans and Air Force I styles.
Boe Eng, 43, of the 2500 block of W. 40th Street, was arrested and charged with felony theft as well as an unauthorized use of trademarks charge, a misdemeanor.
The tactical officers investigating the store had visited it earlier after learning that select customers were instructed to knock on the store’s rear door three times to purchase the fake shoes. Police said that officers tested the theory purchasing 16 pairs of Nikes from Eng in cash.
Eng’s bond was set at $50,000 on July 17.
