Kolby Craig, 35 of Chicago, is accused of hijacking a Dodge van belonging to his ex-girlfriend on the first block of East Cermak Road on June 27.

Craig allegedly approached the car’s driver and told her that he wanted the van. The driver recognized Craig as the vehicle owner’s ex-boyfriend. The driver, though, didn’t want to confront Craig because he was with three other men — each estimated to be in their late twenties and weighing between 250 and 300 pounds.

Craig allegedly took the van and drove westbound, and the other three offenders, whom police have not identified, followed him with their own vehicle.

Sexual assault by a cabbie

An unidentified cab driver is accused of criminal sexual abuse against a customer along the 200 block of South Canal Street on June 26.

The customer hailed a cab and once inside the car, the cab driver instructed the customer to sit in the front so he could, “hear her better.” The driver then began to fondle the customer’s left leg and breast — she then demanded the driver to stop and ran out of the vehicle.

Bank worker accused of scam

A victim said that more than $500 had been taken out of his account at Chase Bank on 1130 S. Canal St. and that the possible culprit is a Chase Bank employee. The victim told police that on June 23 he went to Chase and found that money was taken from his account without his permission.

The victim said that two years after he suffered a stroke an employee at Chase offered to help him with his banking. So he gave the Chase employee his account information for the strict purpose of paying bills. The employee in question has not been at work since the day of the theft.

Man stabbed in apartment brawl

A resident of an apartment building in the 1500 block of South Wabash Avenue is suspected of aggravated battery in the apartment complex against a fellow tenant on July 3. Jerome Scarbrough, 59, began a verbal altercation with the victim when he walked into the game room. Scarbrough became enraged, then left the room and went upstairs to his apartment.

Scarbrough returned and pulled out a small kitchen knife and began to attack the victim with the knife. The victim sustained several puncture wounds to both his left and right leg and was transported to Mercy Hospital.

Police were able to apprehend Scarbrough after learning that he was on his way to visit his mother.

Beach intimidators nabbed

Six men between the ages of 17 and 20 are now in police custody after a suspected aggravated assault at 12th Street beach on June 28.

A beachgoer told police that he was in the restroom of the beach when an offender approached, pulled out an ice pick and said, “How about I stab you, homes?” Five other offenders then came from behind, and one yelled out, “Kick his ass, we from 35th Street.”

The offenders then fled, but police recognized them as the same group from the 35th Street area that had been coming to beaches and causing trouble for lifeguards. Police then were able to apprehend the six, who had been warned several times that they would be arrested for criminal trespassing if on beach property.

Disturbing the peace at the Taste

A 35-year-old Chicago woman was charged with reckless conduct at the Taste of Chicago, along the 500 block of South Columbus Drive, on June 29.

Police observed the woman walking with her hat cocked to the side and approached her — based on these officers’ experiences, members of street gangs wear their hats to the right or the left. “I ain’t no gang banger,” she said. “I was in a bad train accident.” She refused to adjust her hat and started to flail her arms and use profanity.

The woman said that she was stressed from being in a bad accident and wanted to be left alone. Police placed her into custody, saying that she could have struck other citizens who were walking past.

This summary contains information taken from the arrest records from the 1st District of the Chicago Police Department. Anyone named has only been charged with a crime. The cases have not yet been adjudicated.
