Armed robbery in broad daylight

A man was assaulted and robbed on the sidewalk along the 500 block of West Madison Street on the afternoon of June 21.

The victim said that he was talking on his cell phone when an unknown offender armed with a knife and wearing a clown mask accosted him. The offender grabbed and ripped the victim’s shirt and put a knife to his chest.

The offender then demanded the victim’s money, and the victim complied by handing over his wallet, which contained $300 and credit cards. The offender also swiped the victim’s cell phone and fled.

Hotel room heist

A guest of the Palmer House Hilton, 17 E. Monroe St., woke up the morning of June 26 to find thousands of dollars in possessions missing.

The victim told police that he had returned to his hotel room around at around four in the morning after a night of drinking at the Shrine Lounge. The victim said that all of the stolen items were in his room when he returned — $2,300 in cash, $1,370 worth of clothing, $870 worth of jewelry, an iPod, and two credit cards.

The victim added that no one else was inside the room on returning. He said he was “sleeping hard” and didn’t hear any intruders. A friend of the victim told police that various people were in out and out of the hotel room during the day. Police, however, have yet to identify a suspect.

Hotel elevator heist

A guest of the Renaissance Hotel, 1 E. Wacker Dr., had her wallet stolen on the elevator on June 26. The Prada wallet — with an estimated value of $500, contained $200, five credit cards, and identification cards

The victim said that after checking into the Renaissance she walked to the elevator and was joined by an unknown female and two unknown males. The female stood at the elevator and held it while the two males entered the elevator. The victim believes that one of the two males lifted her wallet from her purse and then exited the hotel.

The victim noticed the wallet missing a few minutes later when she entered her hotel room. The Renaissance has video of the incident.

Hooliganism on the el tracks

Two teens are in police custody for reckless conduct at the Roosevelt CTA platform, 22 E. Roosevelt Rd., on the evening of June 22. A third offender escaped the police.

Police responded to a call that three teens walked into a restricted area and picked up a box containing train track nut bolts belonging to the CTA. The offenders then threw the bolts at the cars and pedestrians on the street level below the platform. When police arrived at the station, the offenders fled the platform and walked south on the railroad tracks.

One offender then jumped off the tracks to the street and was immobilized due to injury. The offender was apprehended and sent to Stroger Hospital, where he was reported to be in stable condition. A second offender was apprehended on the train tracks, but the third offender was able to avoid capture.

Police did not find any cars or pedestrians harmed by the thrown nut bolts at the time of the report.

Sexual assault on CTA platform

Daryl Russell, 31 of Broadview, was charged with sexual abuse against a teenager at the Jackson Blue Line station, 301 S. State St., on June 24.

The victim told police that while waiting for the train, Russell approached her and asked for her phone number. The victim told Russell to leave her alone but he persisted in bothering her. As the train approached, Russell grabbed the victim and fondled her.

Russell followed the victim onto the train and continued to bother her. The victim was able to exit the train at the Pulaski station and related the assault to a CTA employee. The employee informed the train conductor and police were able to identify and apprehend Russell at the Forest Park station.

This summary contains information taken from the arrest records from the 1st District of the Chicago Police Department. Anyone named has only been charged with a crime. The cases have not yet been adjudicated.
