A man riding in a car in the 100 block of North Lake Shore Drive was shot June 10 at around 4:00 in the morning.
The victim told police that while in the backseat of a car going southbound, he heard four to five loud gunshots and felt pain in his right buttocks. It turned out that the victim had been shot once in the buttocks from a bullet that shattered the vehicle’s passenger side window.
Neither the victim nor the two other people in the car could identify the offenders other than the fact they were driving a maroon vehicle. The victim was released from Rush Hospital in stable condition.
Cut at a Metra station
Joseph Hegwood, 48 of Chicago, allegedly slashed someone with a box cutter at the Ogilvie Metra station, 500 W. Madison St., on June 7.
The victim told police that he was in standing in line at the McDonald’s in the station’s food court when Hegwood approached him and became verbally aggressive. Hegwood then slashed the victim with a two-inch straight black box cutter and ran away. The victim received an eight-inch cut in his shoulder, which required medical attention by a trauma physician at Northwest Hospital.
The McDonald’s manager observed the attack and notified Metra station security, who had noticed Hegwood fleeing the station. Security then contacted the police, who spotted Hegwood walking eastbound on Harrison Street. Hegwood was detained, at which point police discovered four box cutters on his person. Charges against Hegwood were pending at the time of the crime report.
Lake Shore Drive biker evades attack
Teenagers chased a biker on the lakefront path along the 2200 block of South Lake Shore Drive June 10 at about 6:00 in the afternoon — with one teen carrying a large stick.
The victim said that he was biking southbound when a group of men jumped out from behind some bushes. The victim swerved his bike to avoid one offender, while another offender — who the victim guessed to be 13 — picked up a thick stick. The cyclist said he was able to pedal away fast enough to avoid a possible attack.
Three other offenders had started to chase the biker, but were unable to keep up due to their pants sagging down.
Bistro broken into, robbed
Crepe Bistro at 186 N. Wells St. was broken into sometime between the evening of June 11 and early morning of June 13.
Police noticed the front door glass window fully smashed open, with broken glass splattered throughout the floor. After the store owner was notified and arrived on the scene, he determined that $347 was taken from the cash register.
Medical supplies stolen
An offender broke into a Honda Civic sometime between the evening of June 11 and the morning of June 13 that was parked at 500 S. Clinton St. The car’s owner told police that she found the window broken and $3,000 worth of items missing. These included a cloth bag containing medical parts, speculums, a retina lens and Dictaphone. The offender also took an iPod Dock.
The victim told police that the items stolen belonged to her employer.
Library security de-escalates conflict
Robin Smith, 31 of Chicago, was charged with reckless conduct for attempting to turn off the escalators at the Harold Washington library, 400 S. South St., on June 7.
A library security officer observed Smith attempting to turn off the escalators, and he immediately recognized Smith as the same person who tried to disable the escalators the day before. The officer detained Smith and called the police.
This summary contains information taken from the arrest records from the 1st District of the Chicago Police Department. Anyone named has only been charged with a crime. The cases have not yet been adjudicated.
